 Ecology

IMG_4898.JPEG

CABÜ by the lakes is part of the Lough Oughter Complex which is a Special Protection Area (SPA) and is also a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The foreshore habitat and forest floor creates a diverse and unique environment providing homes for small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and flora and fauna. Beyond the waters edge lies some of the best fishing in Ireland with a wide range of species flourishing in the clean deep water. The reed beds and stony pockets are perfect spawning grounds and provide a rich natural home for the waterborn eco system.

The forest is alive with mammal activity from red squirrels, rabbits, voles, stoats, and badgers. Don't be surprised if you bump into a protected species such as pine martens on your walks. The rare sighting of otters is possible as they hunt along the waters edge on the way to their secret dens.

We are also home to 47 sighted species of birds and can boast 9 different species of bats. Bat boxes are scattered amongst the trees to encourage them to stay. The forest floor is a living breathing eco system in its own right. As the leaves and the trees decay, ferns, scrub and flowers flourish. As the insects carry on their daily life they provide food for nesting birds and mammals. Plentiful fungal life including toadstools and mushrooms can be discovered.

We want to support the diverse insect life, especially the interaction of bees, butterflies and moths, which are under threat. Our wildflowers and tree blossom are key.

The environment is constantly changing throughout the seasons and there is as much to discover in the winter as in summer while the forest is in bloom.

only half the trees life is when it is standing; the other half is through the process of decomposition

Marble arch caves are a global geo park and a miracle of nature, less than an hours drive by car. The Drumlane Monastery ruin can be found overlooking Lough Derrybrick.
