Ecology

irish holiday cabins isolated in the woods in fall season

CABÜ by the Lakes forms part of the Lough Oughter Complex, a designated Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), reflecting its rich ecological importance.

The surrounding woodland and lakeshore provide a diverse habitat for wildlife, including small mammals, birds, amphibians and an abundance of plant life. The waters are home to thriving fish populations, supported by clean, deep conditions and ideal spawning grounds among reed beds and stony shallows.

The forest itself is alive with activity. Red squirrels, rabbits, stoats, badgers and even pine martens can be spotted. Otters are occasionally seen along the water’s edge, while birdlife flourishes with over 47 recorded species. Nine species of bats inhabit the area, supported by bat boxes placed throughout the woodland.

The forest floor is a dynamic ecosystem, where decay gives rise to new growth. Fungi, wildflowers and insects all play a vital role, supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which are essential to maintaining biodiversity.

With each season, the landscape transforms, offering new sights, sounds and experiences year-round. As we like to say, only half a tree’s life is when it is standing; the rest is in its return to the earth.
