Ecology

Bumble bee on a wild purple flower close up

CABÜ by the Sea is a site of special scientific interest, which is of biological and geological importance.

The foreshore habitat and rough grassland creates a diverse environment providing homes for small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and flora and fauna. The geomorphology features buried sediments and surface undulations reflecting the prehistoric shingle ridges lying below the adjacent woodland provides cover for hibernating animals, nesting birds, as well as a breeding ground for amphibians.

The presence of rabbits on site is prolific and very much part of the natural experience. Please tread carefully and watch out for burrows!

You will notice the raw environment of wild flowers and calcareous grasses nestled amongst the thistles and ragwort, all of which are natural and meant to live here. We want to support the diverse eco system of insect life, especially the bees, butterflies and moths, which are under threat.

If you want to venture further afield by car there is Hythe and Folkestone.

Hythe is a coastal market town on the edge of Romney Marsh. There is a farmers market on a Saturday in the church and many creative independent shops. Folkestone has a creative quarter brimming with galleries, coffee shops, independent traders and a seafood counter that stretches around the fountain on the harbour. Its harbour arm has been extensively renovated and is a promenade out at sea with a champagne bar, a host of small eateries, music and entertainment at weekends.

Journey from Hythe across the Marsh all the way to Dungeness. We have our own station at St Marys.

The hamlet of Dungeness with its blend of modern, context sensitive architecture, cabana style bathing huts and lush green gardens, all serving local workers, visiting artists and weekenders the area is a harmonious mash up of past, present and future.

History

old black and white vintage postcard depicting the area 'happy days are here again at new romney'

In 1899 two old Rugbeians bought some land near the seashore with the outbuildings which had been part of the old Coastguard Station.

The new buildings they created became a permanent camp where boys, and later girls from Notting Hill area of London could come for a holiday by the sea. It housed up to 100 people at a time.

In 1903 William Temple also an old Rugbeian and later Archbishop of Canterbury, stayed here. The caretakers house was built in 1922 in memory of the 117 gallant members of the Notting Hill Rugby Clubs who were killed in the 1914 – 18 war.

The caretakers house is now our cottage, while CABÜ House and the pool remain having been extensively restored. The camp buildings have been replaced by our cabins.

Escape to our luxury cabins by the sea at CABÜ for a coastal holiday that combines comfort, modern design and unforgettable nature experiences. Whether you’re relaxing with a hot tub under the stars or exploring the Kent coastline, our luxury cabins provide the perfect base for your next seaside escape.
